United Airlines has worked with Brooks Brothers to design and manufacture a new uniform line for its above-wing employees, including Pilots, Flight Attendants and Customer Service representatives. As part of the process, Brooks Brothers and United Airlines partnered with Intertox and UL Solutions to establish a chemical testing program for the uniform line. This document summarizes the list of assessed chemicals and allowable limits in support of the UL Verification claim: “Tested for known chemicals of interest, including some skin allergens and irritants. Levels are below acceptable limits.”
 
The chemical list and acceptable limits for the United Airlines uniform testing are based on an extensive review of current textile industry restricted substances lists (RSL) and international regulations, according to best practices. These RSLs and regulations focus on testing textiles for chemicals potentially available for transfer to the skin by surface contact or for total chemical content bound in the fibers of the textile. Intertox established the list in consultation with UL Solutions, who conducted testing of the uniforms and issued a Verification Mark validating compliance with identified criteria. 
 
The chemical list includes over 500 chemicals and served as the basis for the UL Verification Mark program. Representative samples of the uniforms passed the screening criteria for each chemical on the list and have been issued the UL Verification Mark. The criteria are established by selecting the lowest limit value identified in the reviewed RSLs and regulations for each chemical.

Verification Method

The chemical list is compiled from a broad array of widely accepted textile industry RSLs and international regulations identifying potential chemicals of concern in uniforms. The reviewed RSLs and international regulations include, but are not limited to: • AFIRM Restricted Substances List (RSL) (2024) • OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 (2024) • EU Textile Regulations • Japanese Textile Regulations The acceptable limits are set based on the reviewed RSLs for the garment. The amount found in the garment is not the dose a person would receive through the skin if exposure occurred at all.
