Victaulic Tools for Hybrid Systems, Version 1.1.1
Nitrogen Pressure And Water Delivery Characteristics Verified
Victaulic Vortex™ 1500 Hybrid Fire Extinguishing systems are modeled in the Vortex design software (Victaulic Tools for Hybrid Systems, Version 1.1.1), for use in accordance with manual I-VORTEX.1500. Representative Vortex systems are assembled, physical performance measured, then compared to the calculated values output from the design software. Testing is conducted on representative Vortex systems. The following data is collected: • Pressure at each nozzle • Water delivery time Accuracy is verified by the following: 1) Testing is conducted on representative Vortex 1500 System installations using varying nozzle selection, panel selection, and piping arrangements. The tested systems represented the following limitations. Test results relate only to items tested: a. Nozzle selection • 1/4 in. inlet with 0.26 gpm cartridge • 3/8 in. inlet with 0.13 gpm cartridge • 3/8 in. inlet with 0.53 gpm cartridge • 1/2 in. inlet with 0.13 gpm cartridge • 1/2 in. inlet with 0.26 gpm cartridge • 1/2 in. inlet with 1.06 gpm cartridge • 5/8 in. inlet with 0.26 gpm cartridge b. Panel selection • Single zone system with 1 in. valve • Single zone system with 1-1/2 in. valve • Multiple zone system with 1-1/2 in. valves c. Piping arrangement • Nitrogen storage pressure of 3000 psig • Nitrogen storage pressure of 2640 psig • Nitrogen pipeline flowrate from 82.6 to 236.7 scfm (calculated) • Regulated nitrogen setting of 27 to 45 psig • Regulated water setting of 60 to 120 psig • Emitter nitrogen set pressure of 25 or 40 psig • Minimum discharge time of 3 minutes (nominal calculated) • Maximum discharge time of 5 minutes (nominal calculated) • Piping volume variance to each emitter – Configurations included imbalance leading to different pipe volumes for each emitter • Maximum elevation change of 16 ft • Types of tee splits – Bullhead and Side/Thru tees were used • Types of Pipe and Fittings – The nitrogen piping was evaluated for Schedule 160 pipe and threaded fittings between the nitrogen cylinders and the flow panels and Schedule 10 pipe and Victaulic grooved fittings with rubber gasketed fittings between the flow panel and the emitters. The water piping was evaluated for Schedule 40 pipe and threaded fittings between the water tank and the flow panels, and schedule 10 pipe and Victaulic grooved fittings with rubber gasketed fittings between he flow panels and the emitters. 2) Each system is discharged, and the following information is collected: a. Nitrogen pressure at selected nozzles (regulated pressure during the water discharge time) b. Water delivery time at selected nozzles (the time from system operation until water is available at the nozzles) 3) Measured system values are verified to adhere to the following accuracy requirements as compared to the calculated predictions. a. Water Delivery Time: Less than 110% of predicted delivery time b. Nozzle Nitrogen pressure: +/- 10 percent
