Product Information

PPG PITT-CHAR® NX is our next generation flexible epoxy intumescent coating system designed to resist the most severe hydrocarbon hazards, including pool fires, jet fires and explosions.  PITT-CHAR NX substantially reduces both the thickness and weight of Passive Fire Protection (PFP) allowing for lower costs and significantly faster application.

Extremely tough, yet uniquely flexible, PPG PITT-CHAR NX is designed to eliminate the risk of cracking and delamination during fabrication, transportation and construction.  This toughness provides dependable performance against weathering and outstanding corrosion protection throughout the asset’s entire lifetime.

Enhanced durability verified by doubling UL 2431 conditioning environment exposures, without topcoat

Verification Method

To demonstrate enhanced durability of PPG PITT-CHAR® NX epoxy intumescent passive fire protection coating, the product was subjected to a double exposure of the exposure conditions required for Classification Category I-A, specified for Outdoor, Heavy Industrial applications as described in UL 2431, Standard for Safety for Durability of Fire Resistive Coatings and Materials. The exposure conditions include air erosion (double air-erosion test cycles), a combination of wet, freeze and dry cycling (double duration), impact resistance (double impact test cycles), industrial atmosphere (double duration), salt spray (double duration), a combination of temperature stability, ultraviolet light and high humidity cycling (double duration), and vibration (double vibration test cycles). After the double exposure, the test specimens were then fire tested against control samples under the hydrocarbon fire test curve defined in UL 1709 Rapid Rise Fire Tests of Protection Materials for Structural Steel and the results complied with the requirements of the standard for this classification category.
