No Thermal Runaway or Fire by Surface Heating, Overcharging, Over-discharging and Nail Penetration

Verification Method

Abuse testing at the Cell Level, per UL 9540A, Test Method for Evaluating Thermal Runaway Fire Propagation in Battery Energy Storage Systems yielded the following results: Surface heating at 4 to 7 °C/min to a hold temperature of 200 °C yielded a cell surface temperature of 256 °C and a cell voltage of 0 V. Overcharge with a 50 A constant current (the manufacturer's specified maximum charge current), until 110% of the maximum charging voltage, yielded a cell surface temperature of 62 °C and a cell voltage of 2.09 V. Over-discharge at 100 A to a final cell voltage of -80 V yielded a cell surface temperature of 140 °C and a cell voltage of -80 V. Nail penetration with nail direction perpendicular to the long axis of the cell yielded a cell surface temperature of 40 °C and a cell voltage of 1.77 V.
